17th Ontario Woodlot Association’s AGM: “Our Forests - Managing Wisely Today for Tomorrow” |
Evinrude Centre, 911 Monaghan Road, Peterborough 8:30 am - 4:00 pm
Mark this date on your calendar and plan to attend the OWA’s Annual General Meeting and Woodlot Conference. Topics include group forest biomass the “new green energy, Managing lowland hardwood forests, edible wilds, capturing the full value of a timber sale and “The Last Stand” - a journey through the ancient cliffs of the Niagara Escarpment, as well as, a silent auction. Timber - Then, Now & in the Future |
Wellandport Community Centre, 5042 Canboro Road, Wellandport 7:00 pm - 9:30 pm
Three very interesting perspectives on southern Ontario’s forest industry. Bruce Kropf, Kropf Forestry Services (1989), Shakespeare, will examine timber prices, landowner values & technology changes over his 34 years in the industry. Jamie McQueen, McQueen Custom Cuts (1995), Welland, operates a specialty lumber mill & store with his father Gord that caters to hobby & professional craftsmen. He’ll discuss what’s happening now. And Dave Bylsma, The Door Stop (2000), St. Anns, will review how he’s utilizing his own timber to produce custom doors for local & provincial markets.
Attendees will have another chance to enter the draw to win an exclusive ticket to this fall’s Owl Rehabilitation Centre open house.

Spring Walk - In Haldimand

What would Spring be without a walk in the woods? Join our hosts, Elizabeth Bain & Trees Unlimited, as we enjoy the lush new growth and eye-popping, colourful wildflowers in an wonderful white pine plantation & hardwood forest. Migrating songbirds will be an added bonus. Bring the whole family and join with our friends from the Haldimand & Area Woodlot Owners Association for a relaxing and educational afternoon. Outdoor Movie Night - Featuring “Sharks” |

Everyone who owns a woodlot has a special interest in the animals and birds that visit or live there. But many of us also enjoy a broad interest in animals that inhabit other environments. Sharks always seem to conjure up feelings of mystery and danger. This critically acclaimed documentary will enlighten and entertain. And to add something special, we’ll be watching it outside under the stars. So bring the kids, lawn chairs, blankets & bonfire utensils. During intermission, we’ll make the draw for the 2 pairs of tickets to the Owl Rehabilitation Centre’s Oct. 3rd open house. This is an event you don’t want to miss.

Fall Forest Festival: Wetlands Can Be Wonderful |
Lorraine & Paul Brown, 4872 Highway 20, RR 2, St. Ann’s 10:00 am - 2:00 pm
The festival will begin with a lovely fall walk through the family’s woodlands & wetlands. You’ll be able to view a 2006 woodland restoration project & a 2007 wetland rehabilitation project via Ducks Unlimited, the NPCA, OPG, LVN & Trees Unlimited. You’ll also be exposed to a miniature skidder demo by B. Kropf forestry Services & the benefits of nesting boxes. And after all of that, we’ll be hosting a delicious barbeque & social. Bring your own cutlery & lawn chairs!! Non-members are welcome at a cost of $40.00/family. Special thanks to the Browns.

Following the business portion of our AGM (1:00 - 2:00 pm), we will be joined by our friends from the Niagara College’s Niagara Environmental Corps & Ecosystem Restoration Program students, the Peninsula Field Naturalists, Niagara Falls Nature Club, Friends of 12 Mile Creek, Bert Miller Nature Club and Fort Erie Conservation Club to hear our featured guest speaker, Dr. Peter Kevan speaking on sex in the Carolinian forest or in woodlot terms “tree pollination”. Non-members are asked to arrive at 2:00 pm.

Please, come join us at the wonderful Fort Erie Conservation Club to celebrate the beginning of winter & the Christmas season. This is our 2nd potluck ever and it will only be a success like last year if our members, families & friends get involved.
