Winter Tree Identification

This morning workshop will show you the tricks of identifying trees and shrubs without leaves. It's easier than you think. Frank Fohr, Niagara Falls Nature Club & our own John Potter will be your guides through this large and beautiful slough forest. Dress appropriately!!

If
you will be attending the March 15 Workshop, the directions to
Heartland Forest in the 2008 NWA Events Brochure are no longer valid,
because Kalar Road is under construction at the Brown Road end. The
only access to Kalar Road is now from Chippawa Creek Road.
If coming from the west (Fonthill and points west), take Highway
20 eastward across the Welland Canal to Townline Road. Turn right
(south) on Townline Road and continue to Chippawa Creek Road. Turn
left onto Chippawa Creek Road and continue to Kalar Road. Turn left
into Kalar Road and proceed to the Heartland Forest entrance gate on
the left.
If coming from the south (Fort Erie/Port Colborne
area), proceed on Netherby Road to the Netherby corner at Montrose
Road, go north on Montrose Road to Chippawa Creek Road, turn left
onto Chippawa Creek Road, and right onto Kalar Road.
The
Niagara Woodlot Association sign will be at the intersection of
Chippawa Creek Road and Kalar Road. Also, binoculars will be useful
if you have them; and bring a pen or pencil.

Rob Tervo & Amy Brant of the OMNR Species at Risk Program will lead us through a short group discussion on how, as individuals and as a community, we can make a difference!!

Road Trip - The Red Hill Expressway: Leading Edge Restoration
Kayanase, Osweken, & The Red Hill Expressway Restoration Sites, Hamilton

This is our road show of 2008. The City of Hamilton , MTO, & Kayanase (an environmental conservation & ecological organization) have partnered to combine ecological restoration with education and training. Travel with us to learn from Alan Arthur's restoration team on how they trained themselves, built a native nursery, involved the public & delivered a site specific restoration program. You may have already seen Alan's work along the 407. It will be worth the drive to Hamilton.
This tour is limited to 50 attendees (unless we can fill 2 buses) and you must register by June 30 with Paul Robertson. There's no cost for members but $35.00 for non-members. Bring a lunch. We'll meet @ 7:30 am and will be returned by 4:00 pm to the Wellandport Community Centre.

Fall Forest Festival: Pruning Plantations & BBQ

Bring your family and a friend and enjoy a fall walk through the Oliver Farm & learn about proper tree pruning. You'll cross the Welland River by wagon, visit old and new woodland restoration projects, practise your pruning & you can even walk their hardwood forest. And after all that, we'll be co-hosting a delicious BBQ & social with the Haldimand Woodlot Owner's Association. Bring your hiking attire, pruners, and leave with a smile.
From Caistorville travel west on Regional Road 9 for 1.6 km to farm on north side of road.
From Empire Corners (Slack Lumber on NE corner) travel east on RR9 (York Road) 5.4 km to #9801 on north side of road.

Annual General Meeting: Gordon Miller, The Environmental Commissioner of Ontario's Annual Presentation & Report

Following the business portion of our AGM (1:00 - 2:00pm), we will be joined by our friends and hosts from the Niagara College's Environmental Corps & Ecosystem Restoration Program students, the Peninsula Field Naturalists, Niagara Falls Nature Club, Bert Miller Nature Club, and Fort Erie Conservation Club to hear our featured guest speaker Gordon Miller the Environmental Commissioner of Ontario (ECO). As an independent officer of the Legislative Assembly, Mr. Miller monitors and reports on compliance by Provincial ministries with the Environmental Bill of Rights. The 2007/2008 ECO Annual Report will be due, so hear it first here! Non NWA members are asked to arrive at 2:00 pm.
From Welland travel north on Hwy 406 to St. David's Road exit, east through the Thorold Tunnel where it becomes Thorold Stone Road. Turn left at Taylor Road North (formerly Beechwood Road) and follow down the hill to the College.
From the QEW exit at Glendale Avenue, turn left on Glendale to Taylor Road at the lights, then left on Taylor to the College.

The Mid-Peninsula Corridor: What are the Alternatives?
